I had to get up early this morning to see Lovely Daughter off as she heads back to her campus. This is probably the last “long” visit before she graduates and moves out. She at least gave in to my cuddle request last night, so we had a few minutes of mommy love. Her cat and I already miss her. As I told Lovely as we were moving her bags outside, Barf Kitty logged more miles this morning than she has all summer. After I watched Lovely drive off and came inside, the first thing the cat did was come to me for some loving. It will take her a few days to adjust to her “mommy” being gone.
At least I feel better about the drive to San Antonio. Lovely made her first major purchase – a new(er) car. The old rust bucket just wasn’t going to cut it anymore. This one is much safer and more reliable. I think she’s going to have a priest at her school bless her new chariot.
I know Lovely be checking in later (she lurks a lot to keep an eye on me). I love you, sweetheart! Don’t be too rough on your residents!

Republicans are gonna take your 25 yr olds insurance away
Republicans don’t care if you have a pre-existing condition
Republicans are in bed with insurance companies
Republicans want to look back rather than move forward
And of course Republicans have always wanted to take granny’s sossecurity away, feed her dog food, are for dirty air and water and would just as soon your (born) chillrens be dead

I still have really warm fuzzy pictures in my head of John Boehner forcefully taking the gavel from Nanzi’s hand, slapping the back of her head and pointing to her to sit down and SHUT THE _-_-@#$%%# UP!
That terd-nozzle Nanzi actually said yesterday that deficit reduction was a mantra for her, it was her main focus; she only added 5 TRILLION to the debt while she was the speaker – WHAT A YUTZ-ETTE.

Good morning all. I wanna see Rep. Allen West (R-FL) come up to Nancy and grab the gavel from her hands, saying ” Gimme that gavel,” and hand it to John Boehner. 🙂
Now that we’ve got the House, let’s not squander the majority status. No quarter, no prisoners.

In case you’re checking in later and the picture has changed, it’s of workers taking down the “Speaker of the House” sign with Nancy Pelosi’s name on it.

O.K. Hamsters, got a busy day, only time for one post
Y’all saw the L.A. weather mess:L.A. NOW
Southern California — this just inSnow shuts key routes into and out of L.A.; more rain, snow on the way [Updated]
Getting into or out of Southern California continued to be a struggle Monday morning as snow and freezing temperatures blocked numerous roads, including Interstate 5, the state’s vital north-south corridor.Hundreds, if not thousands, of motorists were stranded along Interstate 5 and other mountain and pass roads closed by snow. People trying to get back into the region from holiday weekends to the north reported delays that lasted 12 hours or more.
Another key route, Interstate 15, was temporarily closed overnight at the Cajon Pass because of snow. But the California Highway Patrol reopened the route from L.A. to Las Vegas, which was being used as an alternative route for Interstate 5.
A van carrying a dozen movie stuntmen on the way to a film location spun out of control on the icy road, crashed through a guardrail, rolled down a 90-foot embankment, turned over, and burst into flames
There were no injuries.

As far as Boehner crying – I’ve told many of my friends that I am “wired for water”. When I went into ARD meetings at Handsome Son’s schools to discuss his learning disabilities and how we were going to handle his education, I cried at almost every one, especially when he was little. It was difficult for me to imagine the hurdles he’d have to overcome and to see his frustration. It got to the point where as soon as I’d sit down an administrator would put a box of tissues in front of me.
In all those meetings, crying rivers of tears, I never gave up and continued to argue my son’s case. As I told that endless stream of educators and administrators, “I may tear up but I don’t give up.” And when I said that, they agreed with me. I’ve been put through an 8 hour meeting with no meal breaks, seen federal laws broken, and had to go toe-to-toe with the “woman” I called “The Ice Queen”. I may have made mistakes, but I didn’t quit.
As long as Boehner sticks to a conservative plan and doesn’t quit or back down, I don’t give a wissin’ rat’s wiss if he cries or not. Just get the job done.

The lib-terd-nozzles will scream about “going backwards” when the repeal of Obamacare is discussed. Going backwards seems like a great idea to me when going forward means falling off of a cliff. REPENTING from socialism, which fails every time it is tried means going back to capitalism, which works every time it is tried. America desperately needs to repent from its wandering away from constitutional principles and return to the foundational way of life.

Just a heads up for all Houston citizens – the administration has raised permit fees astronomically since Dec 15th. Permit prices have doubled or tripled; a minimum permit fee is now $70. If you are going to have any work done on your house, be prepared. Your tradesman is having to pay a lot more just to have the privilege of working with the city.
FOLLOW UP: I just priced a permit. The price last year was $45, is now $125. Hubby almost had a heart attack. Yep, the city wants to encourage construction of new homes in the city, which would help our economy. Oh, wait….

simply amazing! Congress extends tax rates over democrats objections and immediately in Dec 297,000 new jobs in the private sector.
December 2010 National Employment Report
Private-sector employment increased by 297,000 from November to December on a seasonally
adjusted basis, according to the latest ADP National Employment Report® released today. The
estimated change of employment from October to November was revised down but only slightly,
from the previously reported increase of 93,000 to an increase of 92,000. -

Year-End Debt-Stravaganza
To The Incoming Senators and Congresspeople: YOU ARE ON NOTICE.
No promises to “do something about it tomorrow.” We’ve heard about that now for three years. The time for political stunts and showmanship is over. This is a real issue, it is a real national crisis, and if you don’t do something about it you’ll be lucky to get through 2011 before it blows up.

#17 Hamous, Regarding John Boehner possibly crying on his election to Speaker of the House and receipt of the gavel, if he does, so what? This is not a seminal moment in his life and in the lives of all Americans? Hmmm, Seems Comrade Sebelius has withdrawn the Death Panels from Obamacare only a few days after her minions stuck it back in by fiat, same as the Senate yanked it before Obama care’s misbegotten passage. Heard that on Laura Ingraham’s program this morning. Now Laura did not refer to her as Comrade, but I do.
Ya think the uproar from We The People had anything to do with it? Combined of course with the clout the new House super majority and Senate smaller Dem majority.

Laurie Santos looks for the roots of human irrationality by watching the way our primate relatives make decisions. A clever series of experiments in “monkeynomics” shows that some of the silly choices we make, monkeys make too. (Recorded at TEDGlobal 2010, July 2010 in Oxford, UK. Duration: 19:46)

The bird deaths are more puzzling to me than the fish deaths. Fish die from events that include depletion of the oxygen in their water, or toxins from algal blooms or chemical accidents. But other than a drastic weather event, it’s harder to imagine what could suddenly kill a thousand birds.
It sure attracts more attention now that we can research global news for ourselves on the internet.

Have you guys heard of the Flesch Readability Quotient? It’s a scale for measuring how hard it is to understand written text. Microsoft Word has an option to turn on some readability checks along with spelling and grammar checks.
Darren posted an excerpt last night from Pajamas Media article on Utopia. I pasted those 2 paragraphs into Word and ran the readabilty checks. Results:
Flesch Reading Ease = 20.4
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level = 18.3Reading Ease Scale:
90-100 : Very Easy
80-89 : Easy
70-79 : Fairly Easy
60-69 : Standard

Have you guys heard of the Flesch Readability Quotient? It’s a scale for measuring how hard it is to understand written text. Microsoft Word has an option to turn on some readability checks along with spelling and grammar checks.
Darren posted an excerpt last night from Pajamas Media article on Utopia. I pasted those 2 paragraphs into Word and ran the readabilty checks. Results:
Flesch Reading Ease = 20.4
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level = 18.3
Reading Ease Scale:
90-100 : Very Easy
80-89 : Easy
70-79 : Fairly Easy
60-69 : Standard
50-59 : Fairly Difficult
30-49 : Difficult
0-29 : Very Confusing
You can see from the scores that this text has the most difficult rating, and the Grade Level is somewhere past a Masters degree. I think some of the comments would rate about the same as the article.

I’m not worried yet. As far as the $100 billion cuts, since the fiscal year is already half over (and spent), it would be impossible to reach that number in this budget. But they have pledged to reach the goal in 12 calendar months. Cantor also said today that the “sacred cows”, including defense and homeland security, are on the table. He promised $60 billion in the remainder of this fiscal year. Let’s see if he can pull it off.
On citing the Constitution…I’m willing to wait and see how the new rules play out. Let’s see if bills citing “general welfare” and “necessary and proper” actually make it through.

And Denninger citing a HuffPo piece should make you immediately suspicious.

I’ll give ’em a chance, but I’m not very encouraged by their seeming indifference to entitlement reform. Denninger calls out the left and right equally. Citing HuffPo doesn’t mean he agrees with them in general.

My problem with the Huffpo link is that he’s using it as evidence they have no intention of making serious cuts. Let’s see what happens when they start doing their “weekly cut”.

Well, class is over and was a great success! The students took to my crossword puzzle and most of the talking was productive discussion over the answers. The students told me they really enjoyed the activity tonight.
As the class progressed and none of them were getting close to finishing, I began writing answers on the board every few minutes. As I finished writing, I could hear “Oh! That’s what it is!” One student kept asking me the answer to 3 Down: “Is it Peter?” “I don’t know- you tell me!” “C’mon, Miss! Tell me!” “Well, does it fit?” Student looks down at the paper. “Yeah, I think so.” “Well, check the cross answer and see if it fits, too.” Student looks down, then at me. “What’s the answer to 6 across?” “I can’t tell you!” I put my hand on his shoulder and shake gently, then walk over to the next table.
Later, when I put the answer on the board, he told me “I was right, miss! Why didn’t you just tell me?” “Well, you’ll remember it next time, won’t you?” He hung his head a little and said, “Yeah, I will.”
Too cute, they are.

Let’s see what happens when they start doing their “weekly cut”.
Oh definitely. Like I say, I’m willing to give them a chance. I’m just pretty pessimistic on the whole thing until they show me that they are serious. We shall see. Hopefully they’ll prove my pessimism to be unwarranted.

I’m still trying to draft an alto as a regular for our pre-choir snacks and brews so that we’d have a full quartet. We’ve got the soprano, tenor and bass consistently covered.
The first rehearsal of the year was this evening. We were greeted with folders containing several brand new pieces, and a few that we haven’t done in a few years. Fortunately, this one, to be sung Sunday is easy and we’ve done another arrangement of it before. It’s also pretty. If you want to hear it, click the “listen” button on the web page.
