Ah, yes, WB, THAT’S what Christmas is all about! To all Hamousterians (no TM thingie) and assorted hangers-on, LST remnants, and the world at large, I wish you a most wonderful Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year!
(retreats back into LurkCave, contemplating (a) consuming a hot drink laced with some type of yummy seasonal flavoring; or (b) going back to bed.)
(update: consumed hot beverage out of frustration because server crashed, now going back to bed)

Merry Christmas all!
For those that have been following the New York Times Wedding Vows story, Wendy Shalit of the NY Daily News takes us a decade down the slippery slope:
From an undisclosed location, the bride laughed about the chaos of the moment. “Life certainly is messy!” she chirruped. The bridegroom for his part was solemn when he came on the line: “We’ve had a lot of people tell us how brave we are. They’ve wanted to off their spouses for a long while, but never got up the nerve. We never set out to be role models for honesty in relationships, but I guess that’s what we are.”

#82 SargeBaked beans for Christmas? What kind of tradition is that?

Sarge #82, how unfortunate that an emergency had to cancel the dinner. An there you are with a pot of orphaned New England Style baked beans. Are they different from Boston baked beans? Regarding smoke signals possibly emanating from the house, the Pecan Grove Volunteer Fire Dept. is close by and quick to respond. Not really a tradition. SO’s BinLaw is a very good cook, with a distinctive Southwestern Style. He’s the kind of guy who knows which fork to use with which wine while I’m more knowledgeable about the proper place settings for C Rations, but I wanted to do something that would compliment while offering some constrast. New England Baked Beans are made with scads of brown sugar and molasses, with a schosh of onions and a touch of mustard.
They didn’t come out quite as planned. I took the shortcut to softening the beans and should have let them soak over night. They’ve turned to a bit of bean paste. I’ll do it right next time, less heat and onion, more water and molasses, bigger pot, and do the brown bread as well. There’s not much good Yankee quisine, but baked beans with brown bread and cod fish cakes is hard to beat—-and hard to get in Texas.

The beans sound like a yummy side dish for some other big hoo-hah get-together meal. But for Christmas dinner in America, I thought it was unanimous: turkey and/or ham, dressing with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes with gravy, yams, yeast rolls, pies. Various vegetable side dishes regionally popular, but I truly never heard of baked beans being Christmas food.
Provincial on my part, I’m sure. Maybe what I think of as standard is just traditional in the South.

Yha—that was the intent. BinL was making the main meat dish, and Bros, Sis’s, nephews and cuzzes to bring sides.
But now rather than gathering around the warm glow of a fire in the hearth, they are all setting out to spend Christmas Eve under the harsh glare of a hospital waiting room. My prayers are with them all, and I can handle the excess beans.

Speaking of traditional in the South, I need to start chopping celery for my dressing in a little while. It’s just the two of us, and we can do whatever we want, but we invariably have our big meal at noon on Christmas Eve, and will open our few presents tonight. (We are going lean on gifting each other this year because the house is over-full of stuff already.)
The merriest Christmas wishes to all of you and your families.

Oh now I get it — the beans were for a pre-Christmas family meal. Sorry it was derailed by a medical emergency.

I had no knowledge of Sarge’s marital status but even if you are married, In America you can certainly fix whatever you like for Christmas meal… I wasn’t criticising the beans.

The Philosophy of Charles Schultz
I thought that was nice, but apparently he never declared any such philosophy. 🙁 Ironically, Schults did say, “don’t worry about the end of today, it’s already tomorrow in Australia,” but that part of the “The Philosophy of Charles Schulz” the above You Tube poster left out.

Merry Christmas Eve to all.
Daughters are with their mom today and most of tomorrow. Younger and I are invited to an afternoon meal tomorrow at the residence of the young couple that had lived here in brief spurts over the last few years. It’s their first such dinner endeavor. Normally I’d be apprehensive of such an event, but this young lady has attended cooking classes, and made some pretty delicious stuff when she was here, so I plan to arrive hungry.
For my contribution, I made two batches of brownies. One to bring to the kid’s dinner, and another as a gift for the police officer that lives next door. Wouldn’t ya know, I got the pans confused and now I do not know which one is for the cop and which one is for the kids.
What a dilemma.

My Christmas meal is over, except for the leftovers I’ve already packed up in covered microwave plates for reheating. We’ll have turkey & dressing through the weekend — by design. Very convenient and efficient.
Went over to the subdivision swimming pool to check the leaf baskets — I’m on pool patrol this holiday while pool committee manager is out of town. Our service company is a bit unreliable this time of year. We are theoretically open all year round, but of course no one swims in December and our pool guy knows that.
Now waiting for husband to get back from his own errand run so we can cut the Randall’s pecan pie to top off our traditional Christmas meal. Looking forward to reading everyone else’s first hand account tonight or tomorrow.
Feliz Navidad.

AZ Sheriff Authorizes Lethal Force Against Cartels, Bandits
“We’re sending out three different teams of eight to fifteen deputies in each that are heavily armed, even with sniper teams, out to the desert at all hours of the day and night,” Babeu said.
Typically, deputies would sneak up on smugglers before arresting them, but Babeu says not this time.
“We‘re going to wait until these cartel members come on through and we’re going to announce ourselves in Spanish in this known drug smuggling corridor. That this is the Sheriff, drop your weapons, you’re under arrest,” Babeu said.
In the week following the shooting death of a Border Patrol agent, the Sheriff admits the chances of having a gun fight in the desert are extremely high. After all, it‘s the same desert where one of his deputies was shot and where they’ve seized thousands of pounds of drugs. Babeu says deadly force will be used if his deputies confront dangerous cartels.
“I’ve given specific instruction, no less than lethal force is going to be used. It‘s all lethal force only and we go into that environment knowing that we’re likely expecting an armed threat from these people,” Babeu said.
Este sheriff tiene las ganas que el público estaba buscando. Que Dios lo bendiga.

Well, I got up this morning and made some chocolate cupcakes. Half were orange-flavored and half were mint-flavored. Then I washed a buttload of dishes that were left for me to care for – after we missed our weekly trash pickup. I lost my Christmas spirit about then, took awhile to get it back. Lovely Daughter, Aggie Beau and I then went to see my mother at the nursing and visited for a bit. Her roommate loves to tell us what to do, especially when it comes to noise. Mom was having a hard time hearing us, so I was talking loudly so she could hear. Miss J started trying to shush me, and after the morning I was having, I was having none of her bossiness. I just looked at her and said “I have be loud right now, but we won’t be here long.” She wasn’t happy, but shrugged her shoulders in acquiescence. What was she going to do? Run me over with her chair?
After visiting my mom, we went to my father’s house where we initiated AB into the intricacies of making the family marinara sauce for tomorrow’s lasagna. He was a big hit because he brought a big bag of herbs – basil, oregano, and thyme. (He told me that the only herb he hasn’t been able to grow is rosemary – my one success. Guess what he’s getting tomorrow? 😉 ) The eggplant is probably marinating in its batter for frying tomorrow, LD and AB are finishing up the sauce, and they were working preparing the cauliflower and broccoli for tomorrows mix-and-mash side dish.
I came home, frosted my cupcakes (the orange flavored ones have sprinkles), and covered my garden in case the frost comes tonight. Now I have to wrap presents, take a nap (short sleep last night), and get ready for midnight mass.
Busy day, busy morrow. In case I don’t get to “see” ya’ll –
Have a blessed and wonderful Christmas! May all the family members behave themselves and the peace of Christmas be with us all!

Man, I’ve been busier than a three Legged cat trying to bury his business on a frozen pond. Got the last minute shopping done, went to HEB for grub and cooked a #12 cast iron skillet full of yeller squash and onions, baked my sweet taters to make candied taters and made up the macaroni and cheese for tomorrow. I’ll add cheese and bread to the top of the macaroni and bake it in the morning. We’re having Honey Baked ham with honey mustard, butter beans, turnip greens, squash, macaroni, rice, candied sweet taters, rolls and pecan pie. YUM YUM! 😀
Well I’m off to Richmond to see Daughter and have chili made from Bambi. She also wanted me to see the Christmas lights, it seems that Pecan Grove goes all out every year and it reminds Daughter of our neighborhood back in the day. Hey we won twice! 😉
25 Posts today, that would be a good thing, the folks are making deposits in the ole memory bank. -

Over here on the poor side of town, it’s just ham, smashed taters, mac and cheese (which I hope some is left over to mix with the leftover ham and some rotel tomatoes for tomorrow nite’s dinner), home made cheese cake with cherry pie topping, and the usual assorted other stuff. There’s about a thousand presents for 2 kids, and they are going ape, so looks like things are having the proper effect. Here’s a little mood music for the occasion.

Went to early Mass tonight. Can you believe the priest asked the children to respect and be thankful for their parents and grandparents??? What intolerance! I’m speechless! I say out with the old spiritual mumbo jumbo, the superstitions, and the backward ways. We’re gonna see a brave new world where they run everybody a wire and hook us all up to a grid. Yes, sir, a veritable age of reason. Like the one they had in France. Not a moment too soon.

#19 El Gordo, Iowahawk Forever. His humor has a sharper bite than usual, a thousand slices into the pelts of those who obediently ran liberal wild/nuts for two years and paid for it dearly November 2– but haven’t realized it yet what with the heady lame duck session. Reality moves in, and it isn’t pretty for them.
Whee, rain falling steadily and hard on the north bank of the Brazos at Richmond. A wonderful Christmas gift to our parched landscape, which we’ve been watering the past several days. Better than snow for the moisture content, though not nearly as beautiful. One inch so far and counting.
Thank you, Lord, and Happy Birthday.

I had a special visitor in the cold rain tonight. One of the cats was noisily rubbing its paws on the picture window overlooking the back yard patio. When I went to check on that, I saw a masked face on the other side of the glass. Our favorite raccoon Toebiter had showed up on this rainy night and got grapes, a sugar cookie and dog crunchies for his Christmas Eve meal. A perfect end to my day.

Question related to the Texas House Speaker position: Does anyone have an opinion about Beverly Woolley? Even though her district is in Harris County, I don’t know anything about her.
There’s a recent post on Big Jolly in which she is described as Texas Tea Party Caucus Co-Chair. However she has been in the Lege for 8 terms. It’s hard for me to reconcile Tea Party (which I see as new, fresh, grassroots conservatism) with 8 terms in the Lege.

The house was packed for the first candlelight service, not so much for the second. The choir almost outnumbered the congregation. The men’s choir opened the services with Going to Bethlehem, which is truly a fun song to sing.
We sang 4 other pieces and wrapped with this version of Peace, Peace, Silent night.
During the “Peace, Peace” intro, the lights were slowly dimmed as the congregation lit each others candles one by one, passing the flame. When all were lit, the congregation, candles in hand, sang the Silent Night melody on top of Peace, Peace, led by our director who sings like an angel. It was nice.
Merry Christmas, y’all.

Rain stopped about 9:30, almost 1.5″ gratefully. The wind has teeth and is blowing a gale, enough that I took several decorative items from the front porch inside to keep them in one piece. What a diference a few hours makes. Currently 45 here, and windchill is fierce.
Santa has quite a tailwind if he’s traveling east. G’night all. Merry Christmas. -

We had our discussion on the birth of Jesus and what He did that is so important ot us all. The kids then unwrapped one present each and they’ve been using their gifts all night long. Stockings are now all laid out for the kids. Mrs. Darren and I will hear their excited and giggly voices early in the morning. If I’m up to it, I’ll whip up some omlettes and french toast in the morning after presents are opened. Later we’ll have a small buy yummy meal and redhot pudding for desert.
Mery Christmas to you all and God bless.

Well, last nite I broke out a backstrap off an axis doe that a customer of ours was kind enough to give me. I cut it into one inch steaks, put it on an oak fired grill for a few minutes each side and we had a feast. It was my tribute to PETA(People Eating Tasty Animals). In addition I had some Krolcyzck’s Polish sausage from Hempstead and several New York strips and a half dozen Johnsonville Beer Brats for variety. It was the veritable meat fest at my house last nite.
Merry Christmas to Haymouse and all the good folks at Hambone.org!

The Pope went on vacation for a few days to visit the rugged mountains of Alaska . He was cruising along the campground in the Pope Mobile when he heard a frantic commotion just at the edge of the woods. He found a helpless Democrat wearing shorts, sandals, a Vote for Obama hat and a Save the Trees t-shirt. The man was screaming and struggling frantically, thrashing all about and trying to free himself from the grasp of a 10-foot grizzly bear.
As the Pope watched in horror, a group of Republican loggers wearing Go Sarah shirts came racing up. One quickly fired a 44 Magnum slug right into the bear’s chest. The two other men pulled the semiconscious Democrat from the bear’s grasp. Then using baseball bats, the three loggers finished off the bear. Two of the men dragged the dead grizzly onto the bed of their pickup truck while the other tenderly placed the injured Democrat in the back seat.
As they began to leave, the Pope summoned all of them men over to him. “I give you my blessing for your brave actions!” he proudly proclaimed. “I have heard there was bitter hatred between Republican loggers and Democratic environmental activists, but now I’ve seen with my own eyes that this is not true.”
As the Pope drove off, one logger asked his buddies, “Who the heck was that guy?”
“Dude, that was was the Pope,” another replied. “He’s in direct contact with Heaven and has access to all wisdom.”
“Well,” the logger said, “he may have access to all wisdom, but he doesn’t know squat about bear hunting! By the way, is the bait still alive or do we need to go down to California and get another one?”

Texpat, that’s good stuff. I didn’t even know the Popemobile had 4 wheel drive.
