With the whole clan coming in from all over, I think I will start a new tradition.
Every one will point to the place on the turkey that they were groped on at the airport.

Hamous, from yesterday. Thanks for the Florida history book tip. It looks really good. In the same genre, my favorite Texas historian is J. Frank Dobie.
Short bio.
James Frank Dobie (September 26, 1888–September 18, 1964) was an American folklorist, writer, and newspaper columnist best known for many books depicting the richness and traditions of life in Texas ranging from Cortez to early Texas raching.
He taught in the English department at the University of Texas for many years and was a lecturer on U.S. history at Cambridge during World War II.

I feel no resentment so strongly as that against forces which make men and women afraid to speak out forthrightly. The noblest satisfaction I have is in witnessing the up movement of suppressed individuals and people. I make no pretense to having rid myself of all prejudices, but at times when I have discovered myself freed from certain prejudices, I have felt rare exhilaration.
For me, the beautiful resides in the physical, but it is spiritual. I have never heard a sermon as spiritual in either phrase or fact as, “Waters on a starry night are beautiful and free.” No hymn lifts my heart higher than the morning call of the bobwhite or the long fluting cry of sandhill cranes out of the sky at dusk. I have never smelled incense in a church as refining to the spirit as a spring breeze laden with aroma from a field of bluebonnets.
Not all hard truths are beautiful, but beauty is truth. It incorporates love and is incorporated by love. It is the goal of all great art. Its presence everywhere makes it free to all. It is not so abstract as justice, but beauty and intellectual freedom and justice, all incorporating truth and goodness, are constant sustainers to my mind and spirit.

Happy Thanksgiving all!!!
Per mharper42’s suggestion, I will henceforth be “Dude42”. I am thankful for good suggestions, the number 42 and a whole host of other stuff.
Today’s menu includes brined / smoked turkey, smoked Boston butt pork roast (sat atop the Turkey all night long!), an oven bird, a turducken, cornbread dressing, sweet potato marshmallowy type stuff, pies of several varieties and other various and assorted sundries. So much stuff we’ll barely be able to say grace over all of it, but I reckon we’ll make a good try of it anyway.
Have a blessed, happy and safe day of thanks.

God’ blessings on us all. I am thankful for my belly-button family, my church family, by blogger family, a roof over my head, food in my tummy, loving children (not on drugs!), a computer that works, my health, and a host of other things. I’m even grateful for barf kitty, for all her snuggles and purring. I am extremely grateful to have been born in the most wonderful country in the world. But most of all for gift of my faith, for the God which watches over me.

Welcome, Dude42. The tribe is growing. Wear the handle with pride but beware the pitfalls of a logical deficiency that one of the guys here has labelled “Fortytwoism”…
I don’t remember all the symptoms but some were constant promotion of pot, constant complaints about WoD and Two-Party Duopoly, tendency to post links here to sleazy material on the internet, etc.

My dad got put in the hospital Monday, they said he had/was in a diabetic coma and are finding a host of other issues. Right now a blood clot in his stomach is job one. Blood thinners have not helped, surgery not an option on clots. Idiots at the hospital have willy nilly thrown out the c word as possibilities only for it not to be mentioned again scaring my mom to death.

Fortytwoers:
You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he’s really sick and they won’t take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they’re both faggots and they won’t take either of them. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin a bar of Alice’s Restaurant and walking out. They may think it’s an organization.
And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice’s Restaurant and walking out. And friends they may thinks it’s a movement. And that’s what it is , the Alice’s Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come’s around on the guitar. With feeling. So we’ll wait for it to come around on the guitar, here and sing it when it does.

..I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.
President Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863
Everyone have a blessed, safe and warm holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving all. Mugly 72 again this morning at 6, breezy from the south again, leaves whirling through the yard then going onto the driveway and some piling up against the pasture fence. Soon the north wind will reverse their travels, knocking more down and bringing a rain of acorns and pecans. The wildlife will have a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner.
A squirrel or two have been periodically dancing a jig on the garden room roof the past several days, a regular rhythm in contrast to falling acorns’ thump/rumble. Somebody also has been perching on the top of the chimney under the arch and chattering away. The sound is magnified down the chimney and leads everyone to believe a critter is stuck somewhere inside. Mariposa is on alert at the hearth when that happens. Spouse climbed up on the roof to see if the screen over the flue was still intact for fear somebody was trapped. Screen is intact, so it has to be a squirrel chat session.
Kneemail launched for GJT’s Dad and Mom. A brisk recovery for him and comfort for her.
We usually go to a nearby country restaurant for their wonderful Thanksgiving buffet, but this year I was late to call for reservations. They are booked. So we went there last night for dinner and will have a simple at-home dinner today. Besides, today is battle-plan day for the Christmas decorations change-out from the fall decorations, so there is plenty for me to do besides eat and watch the tube.
We have much to be thankful for, but the top of the list is November 2nd.

My take on Thanksgiving. I could be wrong, but this is what we were taught back before revisionist history.
The religious day of thanksgiving and the harvest festival evolved into a single event: a yearly Thanksgiving, proclaimed by individual governors for a Thursday in November.
Some presidents proclaimed Thanksgivings, others did not. Abraham Lincoln began the tradition of an annual national Thanksgiving..
Thanks for finding the quote.

Washington first proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving in 1789 and again in 1795. But it was Lincoln who formalized it as a national holiday with a fixed day of observance in 1863.
This is a link to a great 2005 column by the always brilliant David Gelernter about Lincoln and Thanksgiving. A sample here:
On that misty April evening, the world had a rare glimpse of the symbolism of a powerful prophecy literally fulfilled, if only for a few moments. The brilliant “city on a hill” that the 17th-century Puritan settlers spoke of seemed embodied in Washington, as the capital sprang to life in a blaze of gaslight. The president spoke of the nation’s long-sought victory in terms not of triumph but of reconciliation, and of the nation’s debt to God.
Some of Lincoln’s friends and admirers, recalling that night, remembered the president as if he were Moses looking “into the Promised Land of Peace from the Pisgah summit,” as one of them, the journalist Noah Brooks, wrote. Lincoln like Moses stood at the very brink of the promised land he would never enter. (It’s hard not to see Lincoln as the greatest religious figure this country has ever produced.)

#19 Oltimer, Monday you asked if non-theists were being hypocritical by celebrating Thanksgiving. I replied, “not at all” and offered these facts.
The tradition of post-harvest fall festivals predates all contemporary religions by thousands of years. A connection to the supernatural is neither sufficient nor necessary for them to happen, but I see no harm in folks making the connection if that’s what floats their boat.
Thanksgiving is the name of specific kind of harvest festival celebration in America. Nothing I said about how it originated or its history was un-factual or in need of “straightening.” Also, nothing I said is in conflict with governors and presidents making it an official national holiday.
If you’d like to think me or anyone else is a hypocrite for having a family dinner today, fine. You’re entitled to you own opinion, but not your own facts.

Hamous, I’ve been meaning to ask about the Stars and Bars flag on your blog banner. It has 13 stars and one is in the center. In online research (not exhaustive by any means), I have found only one website that pictures your particular flag. Mostly, the 13-star Confederate flag I find has all 13 in a circle. I did see a 12-Star Vicksburg Garrison flag with one in the center.
What is the story on your flag? How did you come to choose it?

Not one of the celebrated six flags over Texas, but this is one that briefly flew.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_the_Rio_Grande
The Burnett (gold star on blue field) and Bonnie Blue also flew during the days of the Republic.
I don’t get the Bars and Stars with a star in the center either. I think Semmes struck the seven star circle flag when the Alabama went down but that is from memory. Maybe it is a Florida flag.

Well, I’m back home after stuffing myself at my sister’s house. We play Pictionary after dinner, and tonight one sister and I were in total sync. Four turns in a row – me drawing, her guessing, and two of them were difficult – resulted in the beginning of a rout. The girls’ team crushed the men. CRUSHED them! hahahahahahahahaaaa!
I took some video for Lovely, so now I have to figure out how to upload them so she can have a little bit of the family Thanksgiving.

#34, Okay, the flag as anticipated versus the number states that actually stood up for their rights. If you are dining at the Top Water Grill in San Leon and see a little Catalina 22 sail by flying the Burnett, Bonnie Blue, or Confederate Naval Flag/Bars & Stars, give me a shout. I’ll tack back and buy a few beers.

We just returned home about and hour and half ago from Mrs. Darren’s cousin’s house. We had turkey, ham (you can guess which I chose to fill my plate with, devilled (sp?) eggs, stuffing, mashed potatoes, peanut butter pie, banana pie, cherry pie, chocolate pudding pie, pumpkin pie, and a couple others I didn’t catch while there. We ate, let the kids play, men cleaned up while the ladies raided Black Friday ads, 2/3 of the men (including myself) took solid naps while the kids played (ten of them). Mrs. Darren abandoned me to go on a very budgeted Black Friday shopping spree. now I’m blogging here while the kids watch a movie to go to sleep in the living room. It’s been a very good Thanksgiving.

The banner is sort of an homage to the “Four flags over Hamous”. American, Southern, Floridian, and Texan. I hadn’t noticed that the 13 star version of the first national flag of the CSA was used. I had meant for the 7 star version of the stars & bars to be used. Not sure why he used that one. Its actually pretty hard to find an image of it. The 12th and 13th star were added for Missouri and Kentucky, although they never seceded.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year; one of the reasons I love it so much is the gnosis surrounding the holiday: the fact that there is the legend, but also some facts behind it. The feast of 1621 was actually intended to thank God for the bountiful harvest, because previously they were almost wiped out from famine! Anyway, I try to take a few moments to give thanks in the same spirit each Thanksgiving. Now, according to local advertisers, this weekend is no longer known as Thanksgiving weekend but instead “Black Friday weekend.” Now my favorite holiday has been reduced from four days to one? Perish the thought!
