Too much time on her hands:

Karen O’leary is definitely one of the most patient people on the planet. She spends most of her days cutting away at thick white watercolor sheets of paper, until she creates jaw-dropping replicas of conventional city maps. While you could easily mistake Karen’s hand-cut maps with laser-cut ones, the amount of time and patience she puts into every one of her works makes them unique masterpieces. For each one of her maps, the artist spends a great deal of time drawing it in detail, and only after begins the painstaking process of cutting.

NKorea fires artillery onto SKorean island, 2 dead
By KWANG-TAE KIM, Associated Press Kwang-tae Kim, Associated Press – 31 mins ago

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea says two marines have been killed and 16 others injured in a North Korean bombardment of a South Korean island near the countries’ disputed western sea border.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday that it returned fire and scrambled fighter jets in response. It said the “inhumane” attack on civilian areas violated the 1953 armistice halting the Korean War. The two sides technically remain at war because a peace treaty was never negotiated.
The skirmish came amid high tension over North Korea’s claim that it has a new uranium enrichment facility, and just six weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Il unveiled his youngest son Kim Jong Un as his heir apparent

    WASHINGTON | Tue Nov 23, 2010 5:12am EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House on Tuesday condemned an artillery attack by North Korea on a South Korean island and demanded the action cease.
“The United States strongly condemns this attack and calls on North Korea to halt its belligerent action,” the White House said in a statement.

    Got time for one quickie:

Wesley Snipes was sent to prison for three years on a tax conviction. He wasn’t even offered a payment plan.

In his last movie Snipes played a guy who wanted to join a violent and armed group with no regard for the law, but the IRS wasn’t hiring.

I’ve got the family here with me. We have a relative living in our house in TX. Imported things here are taxed heavily so in order to purchase toys that are high enough quality you pay through the nose. Most stuff here, however, is junk. From furniture to office supplies it is all nothing but junk. Stuff just does not last here. I have, however, had some furniture custom made over here and have gotten a steal because labor is so cheap here… and it is good quality too!

re: Nkorea:: China needs to muzzle her dog before it gets her in trouble. I think the Kim’s reign in Nkorea is about to come to a violent end because even China has had enough of thier BS. It is not in china’s best interest to have war on the Korean peninsula, nor have an insanely poor communist crap hole on its border, but it is in their best interest for them to have a vibrant capitalist trading partner right next door. This being the case, I predict that the Kims are done for and soon.

While we are on the subject of crap-hole dictatorships, our worship group was informed that the Iranian mullahs are on the way out as well and this should happen before Passover 2011. The reason for the downfall will be a shia/sunni conflict; the mullahs in Iran are shiite-heads and they are even more unreasonable than the sunni-holes.

    Big Brother has arrived.

Just this past Friday, we warned you that a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) December Internet power grab was probably coming.

Well, we now know that it is – and it may be even worse than we thought.
    /snip
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski appears to be preparing to dramatically increase the FCC’s regulatory role over the Internet (in TWO ways; more on that later).

He is doing so without the necessary Congressional authority – which he himself acknowledges he doesn’t have. And he is doing so by torturing and twisting the regulatory language he is drafting – so as to keep this extraordinary dictatorial seizure within the current Title I confines.

While pundits who are able to get on TV the same way Kathleen Parker and John McCain did (because they’re Republicans who can be counted on to bash a Conservative every now and then) will call candidate for Texas Speaker Ken Paxton a “lightweight”, Mike Huckabee disagrees:

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee today waded into the Texas House speaker’s race, endorsing Ken Paxton. Paxton, a McKinney Republican, is challenging House Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio.

“While Republicans across Texas and across the nation had many great victories on November 2nd, the battle for true conservatism is not over,” says a statement from Huckabee and his political action committee, HuckPAC. “Now, as the majority Party in many State Houses, and the U.S. House, Republicans have the duty and ability to select strong conservatives to be new Speakers of the House. That position should be filled by one who has the knowledge, ability and relationships to create and push a strong conservative agenda. In Texas, that’s Ken Paxton.”

Apparently, Mr. Huckabee wants to win a primary in the next cycle, and knows how not to alienate Texas Conservatives.

Establishment Republicans backing Joe Straus, not so much.

Good morning all. Mugly 72 at 6, dropping to 71 by 6:30. Ahem, this is late November….
The full Moon graced my walk down the driveway to fetch the paper, fast moving thin clouds briefly shrouding her face in passing. The blue/gray sky as a backdrop had patches of lighter clouds but nothing thin enough to let the stars or Venus come through. Just as I picked up the paper large, heavier cloud banks passed by, and the Moon was gone, not even a faint glow peeking through. This was an omen for the day? Light rain intermittently falling at 10:30 makes the muglies even muglier. Come on cold front. Thank you, Lord.

If we actually wanted to “fly the secure skies,” we’d dump the TSA, and encourage folks to fly with their personal sidearm. At the ticket counter, we announce whether we’re carrying, and exchange our standard ball ammunition 1:1 for Glaser safety slugs.

    Instant flight safety!

In the several instances of Islamo-fascists-turd-heads trying to harm airplanes in flight it was the passengers who subdued the perpetrators; firearms would merely facilitate that action.

We’re learning a bit more about the scandal involving Speaker Joe Straus.

We now know the name of the individual identified as the Straus operative who threatened other Lege members with re-districting if they did not support Straus:

Rep. Larry Phillips, R-Sherman, has been identified as the Texas legislator who threatened colleagues if they didn’t support House Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio.

Any hoped for transparency will not be forthcoming:

The House General Investigating and Ethics Committee has now retreated behind close doors to determine appropriate action. Phillips, vice chair of the committee, has recused himself.

There are two reasons why Phillips recused himself. One is obvious, the other is that he recived $5000 in donations from Straus. But if you recall the article I posted yesterday, there’s one other guy on the Ethics Committee now meeting behind closed doors who has received more.

The chairman of an internal investigating committee meeting Tuesday to discuss allegations of intimidation and retribution by House Speaker Joe Straus received campaign donations totaling $42,000 from Straus and a political action committee he helped found.

The Joe R. Straus III campaign account and the Texas House Leadership Fund made four donations between February and September to the campaign of Chuck Hopson, R-Jacksonville, who Straus appointed in February of 2009 to chair the House General Investigating and Ethics Committee, according to records kept by the Texas Ethics Commission. The Straus and Leadership funds also made two donations totaling $5,000 to the vice-chairman of the committee, Larry Phillips, R-Sherman, the Ethics Commission records showed.

The Young Conservatives of Texas, who support Ken Paxton, have called for Hopson to recuse himself. Others have called for an open meeting. What we got is the number 2 guy in the Ethics committee alledgedly threatening other members using unethical conduct, and a guy who was a Democrat until November of last year, who has also recived $42K from the guy who would have benefitted from the unethical conduct running a closed door meeting.

    Nah.

This doesn’t look like any kind of back door smoke filled room old style politics of the kind we voted to get rid of three weeks ago.

This is a bunch of guys we want to keep in Leadership.

    Saying anything else is nonsensical.

Thanks for the update Sarge. I read the Red State posting of today, and it sounded pretty threatening. I would just say that as a general rule, I would prefer leadership that can get things done in a positive manner rather than having to rely on threats to get its way. If things cannot pass muster on their own merits, perhaps they do not need to pass. I suppose that at the State level, just as at the Federal level, a do nothing legislature would be a good legislature. At least they don’t have as much time at the State level to create their mischief – the Feds should follow suit and only meet a couple of weeks every other year or something like that.

    Gordo.

The guy who got his job by getting 65 Democrats and 10 Republicans (most of whom were former Democrats) to vote for him is not the guy for the job after the election we just had.

Now, we’re seeing the kind of committee chairs he’s appointed.

A Liberal in charge of Ways and Means.

He appoints a guy as Chairman of the Ethics Committee who was a Democrat until Just one year ago

A man who lives with honor says to your face what he says behind your back.

I used to think Chuck Hopson was that kind of man. Today, I learned the harsh truth that he is not.

I always knew Chuck was first and foremost about self-preservation, but I would have thought he would retire before becoming a Republican — a promise he’s told countless State Representatives, party officials, and local constituents. In fact, he had a fundraiser for himself no more than two weeks ago, taking money from Democrats.
Chuck’s decision to join the Republican Party shows that he has sunk to a level of political cowardice I never expected from him. As a former employee of Hopson’s, I feel betrayed by his lack of conviction — betrayed that I ever trusted someone who so clearly puts his own self-interest above that of those who support him.

Then he gives him $42,000 in campaign donations.

And the number 2 guy on the same Committee turns out to be the suspect in the scandal, and also a beneficiary of Straus’ largesse..

Now, there’s folks who will tell you that this is just a coinky dink. That Straus had no way of knowing that he’d need friends in the ethics committee someday.

But this is the kind of thing smell tests were invented for.

On a different thread. With the obvious attempt to spur conversation. Richard Branson is the type of person we as citizens of the US should be looking to emulate.

Self made Billionaire and Commercial Space travel pioneer

British billionaire and Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson could see the gently curving roof line and unfinished steel shell of Spaceport America rising from the desert as his jet banked overhead.

It’s in this remote part of southern New Mexico, where Branson’s dream of reaching space may soon come to fruition.

Branson, the head of Virgin Group, which counts airlines, entertainment and mobile communications among its many businesses, visited recently for a tour of the spaceport and the dedication of its nearly two-mile-long runway. It’s the world’s first dedicated spaceport, which aims to become ground zero for the burgeoning commercial spaceflight industry.

He has made his money and is spending a big chunk of it towards a new dream read the article.

    Well;

After an exhaustive 3 hour closed door meeting, an investigation run by a completely unbiased Committee Chairman, the Ethics Committee has determined there’s not enough evidence to do anything.

The House Investigating and Ethics committee decided in a hearing Tuesday that there is insufficient evidence to act on allegations that Speaker Joe Straus threatened to use the redistricting process to punish his opponents.
The House committee broke into executive session for more than three hours to address and discuss allegations brought by Rep. Bryan Hughes.

    Yah, I know.

    I’m shocked, too.

#39 TT: the interesting thing to me, given a really bad scenario, is that you could fill a common garden hose(?) with salt water and fling it way up a tree and have a real long antenna. From the comments:

Re: Why do you need to pump the water?

On the contrary, a tube filled with stationary ionic fluid works VERY well as both a transmit and receive antenna. I have worked both coasts from Denver with five watts of the HF bands into a saltwater antenna. Here is just one of my experiments with ILAs (Ionic Liquid Antennas):
    http://www.n0lx.com/ILA_EFHWA.html

And there have been several amateur radio operators who have been using saltwater antennas for years including the originator of the idea, David Hatch, N9ZRT.

RE Moroccan goods: I have gotten the impression that European countries, Middle Eastern Countries, and China all sell their most basic grade of anything they produce to Morocco. The materials and workmanship are sub par and things just seem to fail sooner than they should. I believe these sub par goods are indeed sold because a large percentage of the population is so poor. You can obtain quality imported goods, but you pay way more than you would in the U.S. factoring in the exchange rate.

We purchased some furniture from a name brand store here with our housing allowance money. The quality is somewhere between Wal-Mart and Ikea. I have serious doubts about whether it will last a full two years. On the other hand, we have personally paid for some custom furniture that is very sturdy and well made. This cost in the same ball park as the name brand store.

    43, Bonecrusher,

I have held a Ham Ticket for over 40 years and trust me when I say that a length of wire would work better, not to mention the velocity factor of salt water would be harder to determine. You would have to circulate the fluid or heat it, otherwise the salt concentration would stratify and make it harder to “tune” the antenna.

The article was talking about VHF/UHF applications which are dependable for line-of-sight communications at best. VHF/UHF antennas would vary in size (19″ for 146 mhz (VHF) to 6-4 ” for 445 mhz (UHF))

Antenna lengths for shortwave (1.8 to 28 mhz) vary from hundreds of feet at the lower end to several feet at the higher end.

Nice novelty! Thirty years ago I worked Australia with 5.0 watts on 10 meters using my neighbor’s gutter, but this was during the peak of the Sunspot Cycle. I probably could have worked the guy with a dummy load.

Check this really nifty website out to see how radio propagation is doing right now. Regrettably, this cycle has been a real snoozer, but still you get the idea.

Besides the obvious musical factor, what I appreciate most in that video is:

    1) None of their pants were falling down
    2) You could understand the lyrics (no ebonics or street slang or slurred words)
    3) Not a single cop was killed, no rape was inflicted, and no woman was called a name that was customarily in the past reserved for dog breeding purposes

Do you live in a company compound? My company just ran some first-hand accounts on its website about work-life in Angola. Apparently the kind of place where it is hard to get married employees to accept an assignment, even if they can live in a secure expat compound. These web stories are handled like a blog & take comments. So then some commenters got into an argument over how common it was or wasn’t to see dead bodies by the side of the road on the long commute to the rig.

My old freight-forwarder in Houston had a project in the late ’90s in the Congo. He spent months there and had stories that even I could not believe. He said the fact you could go into open marketplaces and buy anything or anybody wasn’t as shocking as being able to buy dead bodies or parts of them.

Off to catch the early bird this morning. Made sure to eat a big Mexican dinner last night. Would normally shower and shave prior to taking off, but I’d rather wait until the molesters finish with me at security. Who knows, I might have a little surprise waiting for one of them if he hits the wrong spot, or pulls too hard on my finger.
