Praise God that Elizabeth was spared this worry with Josh.
A dear friend and former member of my Army Reserve Unit is asking for prayers:
Friends,
I just talked to (name withheld because I did not ask permission to repeat) and she got word today that her nephew, PFC Luke Osborne was injured in Afghanistan yesterday. He is being stabilized and then will go to Germany tonight or tomorrow. Please keep him in your prayers.

May God protect all those in uniform who work to make this world a safer place. May the Lord bless their families and comfort the bereaved. I pray also for the conversion of evil to good, that the hearts of the enemies of liberty, peace, and the sanctity of life may be changed.
Amen.

I’m getting back into my shorthand. I forgot how much I missed it. It’s really useful, especially when Hubby calls to give me my “to-do” list.
And I can write notes about him that he can’t read! 😉 (I used to do that to my high school French teacher – it drove him nuts.)
Useful for gift lists, no one knows what I’m planning. Quick notes. Personal thoughts that I want to remain personal. Impress people for no good reason.
Lovely and I had talked about her learning it so we could have our “secret code,” but she never did. Shame.

Yes, there are several systems: Pitman and Gregg are the most common. I learned the Gregg system, which is based on cursive strokes and flows more like “regular” writing. There are sites on the internet which will teach you, but how much speed you gain is totally up to how much skill you develop. I was required to have at least 15 minutes of shorthand in addition to my class time. When I graduated, I was taking dictation at 110 words per minute, with gusts to 120.
I found a Gregg textbook at a garage sale or Half-Price or something, and I was looking at it over the weekend. I also found some 1930s editions of Gregg Shorthand textbooks, which I am keeping for their personal and potential collector’s value.
Even if all you learn are the brief forms, you will find shorthand useful.

I will say, on the subject of shorthand, it saved my butt in my freshman history class at A&M. My professor spoke so fast his tongue tripped over itself. This was before taping was common, so I took my notes in shorthand and transcribed them at night. That not only enable me to keep up with the professor’s speed, but the transcribing process helped to reinforce the information in my memory.

THE UGLY FROG
An older lady was somewhat lonely and decided she needed a pet to keep her
company. So, off to the pet shop she went. She searched and searched. None of the pets seemed to catch her interest, except this ugly frog. As she walked by
the jar he was in, she looked and he winked at her.
He whispered, ‘I’M SO LONELY, TOO. BUY ME AND TAKE ME HOME.. YOU WON’T EVER BE SORRY.’
The old lady figured, what the heck! She hadn’t found anything else. So, she
bought the frog. She placed him in the car, on the front seat beside her.
As she was slowly driving down the road, the frog whispered to her ‘KISS ME
AND YOU WON’T BE SORRY.’!
So… The old lady figured, WHAT THE HECK, and kissed the frog.
IMMEDIATELY the frog turned into an absolutely gorgeous, sexy, young, handsome prince.
The Prince then returned the old lady’s kiss.
Suddenly the old lady felt herself transforming from his kiss. Now…can you guess what the old lady turned into????
COME ON GUESS!

I do not know which form of shorthand my mom utilized. I did not realize more than one form existed. She spent years as a secretary for various businesses and said that her shorthand of 120 words per minute along with the ability to type as fast kept her gainfully employed. When I was a boy I saw some shorthand books she had picked up when she was younger. I doubt she still has them.

Everyone, I want to call attention to Adee’s morning weather report in #128, stuck at the bottom of Weekend OC.
Rain squalls offshore creep closer to the coast; the radio crackles intermittently to herald their approach. Perhaps it’s an omen of tomorrow’s event at the polls Distant rumbling thunder elicits thoughts of T-Rex footfalls?
Lady Adee, I am totally in awe of your gift with words.

I was a charter supporter of LST when it was first started up. Then I was working 60 hrs a week and drifted away. Now I am “retired” and contracting part-time to the old company. So have time for interacting (i.e. lurking) with this merry band that has evolved into The Hamsters.
Adee, I’d like to hear your story, how you became a wordsmith, what you have done with your gift.

And kind rembrance of Liz and her sweet nature and of Josh’s service to our country. May he be watched over in his duties.

Have been busy helping with plans for tomorrow night’s election returns watch party Fort Bend County Tea Party is hosting 7-10 at Zorro’s Mexican Diner in Greatwood just off 59. Will be busy helping with decorations, door prizes, and silent auction as well as being a go-fer as needed. I expect the evening’s events will keep everyone invigorated. And up late.
