Y’all letting a septuagenarian get first place? Shame on you young’uns.
President Obama listed his accomplishments the radio Tuesday. No one gives him enough credit. Barack Obama took something that was in terrible shape and brought it back from the brink of disaster.
The Republican Party.

That film was good. I’ve never seen them load up like that, but I have seen them on our jobsites do some pretty good tricks at repositioning themselves or their load by some of the same twisting, turning and head stands. A good operator is a blessing to the jobsite.

Well the Boy and his Bride are staying at one of those Fancy “All Inclusive ” places between Playa del Carman and Puerto Morelos Mexico on the Yucatan. There is no cell phone service, THANK GOD, when we stayed at Playa del Carman we made two phone calls about 20 minutes total and were billed $547 US when we got back !?!? I made a call to the outfit and they cut the price in half and fed men some bovine scatology about how they served places that no one else would so I figgered I’d just take my losses and pay.
OK Dave you’re drifting,…The boy has the net and It’s free so he sent a E Mail about day 2 and he was amazed at the service and food and said that they were having a great time. He only has about 3 days left. -

Man who was a “woman trapped in a man’s body” cuts his junk off. Eight years later, he decides he was a man all along and tries to have a reverse sex change (how is that even possible?) Now he’s claiming he’s disabled, will never be able to work, and his former employer should pay him a a “total and permanent incapacity (TPI) pension”. They rejected him. The High Court (Australia) agrees with him.

Good morning all. Wonderful 37 at 7:30 this morning just as the Sun was yawning and stretching over the horizon. The trip to the barn at 6 was in velvet darkness other than the light over the barn and at the back door. Walking down the driveway to fetch the Chron.(it gives someone out here a job delivering the thing, that’s its primary usefulness) the stars were so bright despite a half Moon. Amazing what a cold front does to clear out the veiling junk above. Orion was fixing to set shortly, no problem seeing the background stars. Thank you, Lord.
Impossible to speculate on what further madness the Dems will unleash before Tuesday night. Seems most of their standard playbook is accomplishing nothing but making We The People even angrier and more determined to throw the bums out. Love the backlash Little Lisa Murkowski’t write-in campaign hijinks birthed–a list of 100 or so write-in candidates, with her name buried alphabetically in the midst. Careful what you wish for and set in motion, Lisa. Hoist on your own petard mayhap? Bring it on.

I’ve seen Hubby do similar moves (not quite fully loading, but loading assist) with his backhoe. Between his outriggers and the bucket, he can get a little creative with equipment placement at the job site. I’ve seen a backhoe like this one climb to the top of a platform. Scary, but these guys – the ones who are good – know what they are doing.

I’ve never seen them do it but the track hoes unloading gravel from railroad cars here in Magnolia have to make some sort of maneuver like that. I see them on top of the car straddling the sides and no ramps or anything to get them up there.

Yes, I just read it. From Friday night’s ethical atheism thread…
btw – You are straying very close to the Gospel when you mention the Golden Rule.
I fully acknowledge the role of Judeo-Christian philosophy in how Western civilization became the most advanced part of the world. And I am not one who advocates “breaking the crosses off war memorials”, as Michael Savage puts it.
But, sorry, “a fair share” and “a fair shot” at acquiring your share are not the same thing. I don’t see how the right (in the West) not to be enslaved or have your stuff stolen from you has anything to do with a fair share. To me, that’s freedom and property rights.
Perhaps the word “fair” has been so adulterated by leftists that it is now meaningless.

This story about an 84 year old woman driving the wrong way on the freeway is scary enough.
Some of the comments are hilarious – and scary:

Gee, Steve. I can only bet that you are in your early twenties, a Dem, and voted for Obama. Hope you like the change when you get older and his death panels decide you aren’t worth keeping alive.
October 30, 2010 at 10:35 amLayover
“Death panels”? Really? Seriouslly? You guys still believe that?
October 30, 2010 at 10:45 amGoosecreature
Umm, they are actually in Obamacare. Just like that federally-funded abortion that they told us was not in there.

Once people hit the age of 70 they should not even be permitted to drive….forget doing mandatory testing! Once you hit 70, the license is gone, no matter how good a driver you may still be.
October 30, 2010 at 9:06 amsonnyboy
Hey Steve, type in “young wrong drivers” on your computer and you will come up hundreds of cases where the driver was under 30 years old. A lousy driver is a lousy driver, regardless of age.
October 30, 2010 at 9:29 amSusan
People should not be allowed to drive before the age of 30. Young brains are not yet fully developed.

Don’t make stupid generalizations such as this. My father was a licensed pilot who flew his private plane until he was 80, without an accident. Wait until you are 70 and you will rethink your stupid comment!
October 30, 2010 at 9:51 amMandy
Yeah, wait until you hit 70. You must be in your 20′s. People at 70 can still drive. When they hit 80, some can’t drive. It should be on a case by case testing.
October 30, 2010 at 10:15 amdocjoe
Maybe we should just kill everyone over the age of 70. Save money on health care, social security, etc.
Let’s see, you are about 20 years old and a Democrat who voted for Obama. Tell me if I’m right or not.

Would be nice if we could retire by then, but with the tax/SS situation, they want us working til we are ‘shovel ready’ and that will be up past 70. We will have to keep driving to get to work so illegals, welfare mothers, and congresscritters don’t have to.

Speaking of fairness, I have recently heard Neal Boortz talk about Nancy Pelosi’s speech to Steelworkers Union in which she said “that disparity is about ownership and equity. It’s all about fairness in our country.”
In Boortz’ opinion, the reference to “equity” hints that what the Dems want to do is seize private retirement accounts and use the money to shore up unfunded union pensions. He says, if the Dems are left in power on Tuesday, or get back in power someday, they will try to pass legislation to nationalize IRAs, 401Ks, private pensions etc into a federal pension program that will share our personal savings with union retirees.
To find a link to the speech, Google “pelosi steelworkers equity”.

In a world not contaminated by sin, they may be the same thing. Most lefties, especially Marxists, envision a socialist utopia where everyone provides for themselves and everyone else. They never realize that it is impossible to actually bring about by us imperfect people. The only time it has ever happened was in the Garden before Adam & Eve fell to sin.
As the article said, it’s not the possessions (or lack thereof) that are the root of our poverty problems; it is mankind’s loss of the full communion with God (i.e. sin).

Here’s another prediction – Shrillary will resign as SofS late this year or early next year and begin her challenge of Obama in 2012. The Democrat operatives are already greasing the pan:
What a change two years can bring.
We can think of only one other recent president who would display such indifference to the majesty of his office: Richard Nixon.
We write in sadness as traditional liberal Democrats who believe in inclusion. Like many Americans, we had hoped that Obama would maintain the spirit in which he campaigned. Instead, since taking office, he has pitted group against group for short-term political gain that is exacerbating the divisions in our country and weakening our national identity. The culture of attack politics and demonization risks compromising our ability to address our most important issues – and the stature of our nation’s highest office.
…
With the country beset by economic and other problems, it is incendiary that the president is not offering a higher vision for the nation but has instead chosen a strategy of rank division. This is an attempt to distract from the perceived failures of his administration. On issue after issue this administration has acted in ways that are weakening the office of the president. We’ve heard comparisons with FDR, Truman, Wilson, and of course Jimmah. But comparing our Nubian Prince to Nixon??? Ouch! That’s gotta hurt.

The only time it has ever happened was in the Garden before Adam & Eve fell to sin.
I believed it happened here too.
And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
Acts 2:44
It’s repreated with more detail here:
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
Acts 4:32
I believe it’ll happen again during Christ’s millenial reign.
Notice the common factor? It has nothing to do with government forcing people to share. It’s done willingly and by those with an eye to the glory of God.

Ohio McDonald’s Encourages Employees to Vote Republican
The fast food chain’s corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill., quickly condemned the action by Canton franchisee Paul Siegfried, saying it violated company policy. Allen Schulman, an attorney representing one of the employees, said Friday he had forwarded the paycheck insert to Canton’s city law director, citing an Ohio law against corporate advocacy in elections.

This is a GREAT article from
one of our fabulous News originationsNO WAIT the UK the UK?!…… OK, US midterm elections: Barack Obama’s world turned upside down as Democrats face electoral disaster.Far from being an asset to his party, Obama is widely seen as a liability.
In the closing days of the campaign for Tuesday’s midterm elections, he is not wanted by the Democratic candidates in states like Kentucky, West Virginia or even Colorado, where there are knife-edge Senate battles.
While his predecessor Bill Clinton has held more than 100 events across the country, Obama is limiting himself to the friendly turf of Democratic “blue states”.
On Saturday night, he will campaign in Chicago. That he is being forced to defend his home city in deep-blue Illinois, where his old Senate seat is in danger of falling to Republicans, speaks volumes about his predicament.
The irony of Obama being the blue-state president is acute. Back in 2004, the then state senator shot to international attention by mocking the pundits who “like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States”.
He declared: “There’s not a liberal America and a conservative America. There’s the United States of America. There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America. There’s the United States of America.

Want to know how the world will look if Congress reinstates the Fairness Doctrine? Take a long look at what happened in Alaska when a radio talk-show host ran afoul of the political Establishment. After running a contest to get Alaskans to add themselves to a list of write-in candidates for the Senate race, Lisa Murkowski’s ad buyer threatened to get the FCC involved in Dan Fagan’s “electioneering” — and got him taken off the air. Now Sarah Palin has launched a broadside from her Facebook site against Murkowski for attacking free speech and political discourse:
For the “Republican Party first” crowd, wasn’t Murkowski a shoe-in?

“Jerry ‘You Lied’ Brown”? I like it.
New Whitman ad hits Brown’s “it’s all a lie” admission
The Michael Kinsley definition of politcal gaffe is the accidental telling of an embarrassing truth — and if that’s the case, Jerry Brown committed the ultimate gaffe. Only Brown didn’t commit the gaffe in this campaign; he committed it fifteen years ago in an interview with CNN. Brown told the network that politicians in his experience don’t really have plans for governing, or at least specifically in his own experience. He admitted that he lied in order to win election in 1974, and Meg Whitman pounces on it in this eleventh-hour ad:

Does this mean legal pot is being misused and given to the kiddos?

Guess what, I found out what happened to Bobby!
ST had once suggested if I wanted to try out a format in a comment, to use an old thread. Well, with that in mind, I went to the bottom of Thursday OC and found there that B42 had posted the following on Friday afternoon:
I’ll come out the corner if/when I learn to express my opinions in a less assertive/provocative manner that does not invite broad brushed scorn from narrow minded self righteous authoritarians. I’ll work on that, but can not guarantee success.
He says he’s working on his instrument, but sounds like he is mainly sulking.

MH42,
I hope Bob comes out of his self-exile. I cannot speak for Hamous’s blog. It is his to administer, but we need to hear every diverse opinion out there. Every now and then there is the lone voice that says, “The King has no clothes.”, and to our amazement the King is buck nekkid. (Naked is when you are nude. Nekkid is when you are nude and up to something)
I can understand that he might not feel a giant group hug by the tone of the posts from the last few weeks. I myself have felt the flames from time to time.
There are core beliefs held by all that are developed over years if not decades. It is not realistic to believe one can overturn such beliefs by a clever bit of rhetoric, logic, or a voluminous posting of some tome from another website. People will stubbornly hang on to their beliefs no matter what “proofs” you offer. Mostly, I think this is a good thing.
I am an engineer and have been in more contentious engineering meetings than I would like. Engineering is the science of practical physics. We base our craft on knowlege and practices that started with the ancient Egyptians and today each branch of Engineering has a fairly rigid set of Standards and Practices. (ASME, IEEE, AIChemE, ASCE, ASTM,…) You would think there would not be much wiggle room in any engineering endeavor, but I am constantly amazed at my counterparts who “discover” new modifications to physical law and accepted practices. The really surprising thing is how hard they will cling to these new discoveries despite the abundance of overwhelming proof to the contrary. People can be stubborn.
I know this bit of human nature and everyday I forget it and try to run against the wind instead of seeking agreement where I can and remembering there are things I can change and things I cannot.
Simple

Howdy, SS, long time.
I see people (such as myself in the past) can still get their nickers in a twist when feeling slighted. I’ve never known a group of you fellows that couldn’t take a discussion, altho I DO remember the Paulians that got a little too caught up in their ideology. I don’t know of what was happening, but I know from experience that grudges tend to last very long amongst y’all. -

Simple, as the field engineer/tech that had to make things work once it was manufactured, I can relate to your considerate statement, but can also tell you there are some “engineers” that have NO working knowledge of physics nor natural law and would argue to their death about something until I could get them to look at an o’scope proving my point that something just DIDN’T work.
Too bad all my knowledge and expertise is wasted for the lack of degree. -

I had a Physics professor who thought that the film of the Tacoma Narrows bridge should be run on an endless loop in every Engineering Department lobby in the world. Somedays I think he was right.
Engineering School is tough and despite that there are more than a few boneheads out there. Same for Physicians, Lawyers, and just about any professional field.
The greater point was that people will argue over verifiable data and hold on to indefensible positions. How can one hope to ever win an argument over positions based upon beliefs developed over a lifetime?

It’s not fair! The ball bounced funny.
When’s the last time UT was unranked and have a losing conference record (4-4 overall) at this point in the season? It’s looking bleak for a winning season at this point, even though they still have KState (similar record) and Florida Atlantic University (?!? how did they get in there at the end of the season?) on their schedule. They’ll prolly lose to OSU and A&M.

Happy Halloween all. Started off with a nice 48 this morning, chilly but not like yesterday’s 37 that was more than a tad chilly. Beautiful day with a light breeze knocking more pecans onto the ground, windows open to the fresh air (and pollen of course). A nice evening is on tap for parties and trick or treaters.
Early voting in Fort Bend County finished with 78,855 votes cast, more than double the 2006
turnout for the gubernatorial and Congressional mid-year elections. Rain chance forecast for Tuesday isn’t likely to affect turnout much if at all. Not when folks are fired up big time.Hey Kent, glad you found our transplanted merry band of Hamsters.

#105 Dude, thanks for the encouragement. I suspect that like Rhodes fans, there’s a few folks out there on the net with a similar fondness for Korgs. If it’s one of the older models that used discrete semiconductors more than chips that might be hard to find now, full functionality is probably attainable. Although it might take some creative electronic engineering and full schematics.
The Rhodes is a 100% analog/mechanical device. I’m gonna spend another week with my head in the books, finding my tools, and chatting with folks on the web before I dig into it, with hopes of completing the restoration a few days after digging in. Having experience as a typewriter repairman, I don’t think I’ll find anything I can’t fix. A keyboard is a keyboard.

Yup. I’m on a Yahoo users group and there’s one guy on there in particular who is very knowledgeable w/ the Korg Mono-Poly and the Poly Six. The Korg I have is fully functional, I just don’t use it much any more. I play one of these I picked up a few years ago for the most part now. On occasion I’ll patch in the old Korg to it to record a lead track or something.
Speaking of which, I’m getting ready to start using this site as a means to post music I’ve written. Very cool site, even if you just use it to download other people’s music. Downloads are free, but of course if you wanted to throw a few shekels to artists whose music you like via PayPal I’m sure they wouldn’t mind.
Happy tweaking and playing,
Dude

I’m jumping in, but I don’t know for how long. Dinner and a pile of mail/papework, ya know.
I actually had a lovely time with my mother yesterday. We went to Target to get her items and managed to find all but the soft mints. I believe I usually get those from CVS or Walgreens. She was in a good mood and not at all nit-picky or blaming. Ah lahks it when my mother doesn’t instill this urge to strangle the wiss out of her. Life is so much better that way.
This afternoon I spent time with my sister and brother-in-law. She’s the one with the neurological issues an hubby has the cancer. I was envious of her garden – again – we talked about her chickens. They have put BIL’s mother into the same nursing/rehab center as my mother. Her apartment has mold issues and when sis went to get her after a frantic phone call about breathing difficulties, she found one of those places that tend to show up on the news. She’ll be in there for 20 days, and hopefully they’ll have her heart arrhythmia and pneumonia under control.
I spent some time in the front yard near the street today, picking up pecans. Yesterday I saw man walk out of someone’s front yard on a neighboring street with a bag of nuts in his hand. There were two other vehicles parked in front of homes on the same street. On the way home from church today I saw a whole family swarming someone’s ditch. There was a man in front of my friend’s house, digging through her ditch, and I tried to explain that she didn’t want anyone picking up her pecans. He didn’t speak English, and even after I drove off thinking I had finally made him understand, I could see him in the same place. It ticked me off. I went home to pick up my pecans to discourage loiterers (we had a rash of burglaries last year during pecan season). Later I saw him pulling across the street from my house (lot has no house on it). I had to leave, but I hope he can at least read my “no trespassing” sign, but I doubt it. It’s in English.
I love my neighborhood, but I hate the people who think they can invade our property. Even if they mean no harm, how do I know that? And what if I want the nuts that come from my trees? I was raised to respect other people’s property; not so much, these people.

I’m watching “Undercover Boss”. This week the CEO of Chiquita is trying to harvest and process lettuce. He just recently became a citizen, and he’s wearing an American flag lapel pin.
But our president doesn’t think it’s important.

Tedtam, that trespasser just wants his “fair share” of your pecans. 8)
Seriously, though, is the ditch your property? If I had a pecan tree in my front yard and pecans fell or rolled into the street, I think legally anyone could come by and take them.

Our civic club checked with the police. Legally, all pecans to the center of the street belong to me, and vice versa for my neighbors across the street. There IS an easement there, but I guess because the nuts came from trees that I care for, they belong to me.
The main problem with people stopping to pick them up in the street is that there’s one just a few inches away from the street edge — and then another that rolled into the bottom of the ditch, so let’s climb down there — and hey! there’s a whole bunch of ’em here, let’s just stay for about 30 minutes in front of this stranger’s house — oooh! Lookee! There’s some that I can reach from the ditch if I just stretch a bit — well, they won’t mind if just step in a few feet to reach those few —
You get the idea. My neighbor said he came home one day while I was out and a utility company truck had cones out and the worker was “working over” my front yard. It’s not unknown for these nut pickers to go all the way to your front door, if they don’t think you’re home.
And then, we never know if those strangers are “just picking pecans” or “just casing my house”. We had a rash of burglaries last year during pecan season.

And then there are those who argue with you, in front of your own house…
I put up “No trespassing” signs because without them, I could not call the police if anyone invaded my property.

Oops. On tonight’s weather forecast it looks like rain coming with the front arrives Tuesday morning. That will affect voter turnout somewhat if it brings nasty storms. But then so many of us are angry enough to crawl over shattered glass to the polls that some rain should not be a great concern.
G’night all.

Good morning all. Mugly 70 at 6 and 7 with heavy ground mist rising to veil the Sun. Rain squalls offshore creep closer to the coast; the radio crackles intermittently to herald their approach. Perhaps it’s an omen of tomorrow’s event at the polls Distant rumbling thunder elicits thoughts of T-Rex footfalls?
