Weekend Open Comments

From the LA Times:

In this crazy election year, the tea partyers have shown surprising strength. But the internal contradictions are so numerous, it’s hard to see how their influence will last.

From the Wall Street Journal:

Those who doubt that the failings of higher education in America have political consequences need only reflect on the quality of progressive commentary on the tea party movement. Our universities have produced two generations of highly educated people who seem unable to recognize the spirited defense of fundamental American principles, even when it takes place for more than a year and a half right in front of their noses.

Well, after it happens enough with no satisfactory resolution, you might just lose your nut and deal with it yourself. Maybe this will serve as a warning to the next loser who wants to try the same thing. Obviously, the existing punishments were not enough of a deterrent.

The restaurant employee, whose name was not released, told responding officers that he took Aguilar outside the back of the restaurant and struck him with the pipe because “he was sick and tired of this type of thing happening at his business,” a police report said.

That’s mafia-styled enforcement, kinda like judicial activism.

Billions of dollars wasted by our government to fight fraud. All that is left is for government to swoop in in overpowering numbers to crack down on fraudsters and if that doesn’t work in conjunction with wasting billions of dollars to fight fraud, let’s just legalize it. That way the market for credit card fraud will naturally dry up ad we’ll be a lot happier by being more like western Europe.

Fraud and theft are far from being victimless crimes. People should be more free to associate and exercise control over their lives, but nobody has a right to steal the property of others.

    FACT:
Laws and punishment are not deterrents to persons committing criminal acts.

Laws are nothing more than a legal process to identify inappropriate behavior and establishing punishment.

What fascinates me most is the more society accepts what was at one time abhorrent behavior more laws and punishment are created.

And as more laws are created……. more liberty and freedoms are taken away.

    Something to think about

“He who made us would have been a pitiful bungler, if he had made the rules of our moral conduct a matter of science. For one man of science, there are thousands who are not. What would have become of them? Man was destined for society. His morality, therefore, was to be formed to this object. He was endowed with a sense of right and wrong merely relative to this. This sense is as much a part of his nature, as the sense of hearing, seeing, feeling; it is the true foundation of morality… The moral sense, or conscience, is as much a part of man as his leg or arm. It is given to all human beings in a stronger or weaker degree, as force of members is given them in a greater or less degree. It may be strengthened by exercise, as may any particular limb of the body. This sense is submitted indeed in some degree to the guidance of reason; but it is a small stock which is required for this: even a less one than what we call Common sense. State a moral case to a ploughman and a professor. The former will decide it as well, and often better than the latter, because he has not been led astray by artificial rules.” –Thomas Jefferson to Peter Carr, 1787. ME 6:257, Papers 12:15

I fear that in our country the line of right and wrong has been so blurred that our country is doomed to conflict that can only tear her apart.

“The moral law of our nature… [is] the moral law to which man has been subjected by his Creator, and of which his feelings or conscience, as it is sometimes called, are the evidence with which his Creator has furnished him.” –Thomas Jefferson: Opinion on French Treaties, 1793. ME 3:228

Jefferson could have just as easily substituted the word “god” in the place of “creator”. I am of the opinion that all man worships, is “subjected to” something, be it capital “G” God, self or the government.

Laws are nothing more than a legal process to identify inappropriate behavior and establishing punishment.

Laws express the will and prevailing opinion of the association of individuals called Society. We express what we will and will not accept among oursleves as acceptable behavior, and what behaviors should be excised from our association amongst ourselves for our own good.

We have a death PENALTY because this association of individuals has decided that there are certain acts that, if committed, will result in permanent removal. All punishment should be exactly that, not a deterrent. It was not until deterrence became the supposed goal of punishment that we have seen an increase in crime.

Compare the amount of crime in the Depression ravaged 1930’s with that which occurs in the relatively prosperous times we find ourselves in even the current economic environment and my point is well made.

Fantastic companion piece to the WSJ article linked above.

Because a generalized love of liberty doesn’t distinguish tea partiers from other Americans, liberals have been free to speculate on the “real” motives behind the movement. Explanations so far have spanned a rather narrow range, from racism (they’re all white!) to greed (they just don’t want to pay taxes!) to gullibility (Glenn Beck has hypnotized them!). Such explanations allow liberals to disregard the moral claims of tea partiers. But the passion of the tea-party movement is, in fact, a moral passion. It can be summarized in one word: not liberty, but karma.

Yah, yah—I know. “New Age psychobabble” sez you. But wait, as the late Billy Mays said: there’s more.

To understand the anger of the tea-party movement, just imagine how you would feel if you learned that government physicists were building a particle accelerator that might, as a side effect of its experiments, nullify the law of gravity. Everything around us would float away, and the Earth itself would break apart. Now, instead of that scenario, suppose you learned that politicians were devising policies that might, as a side effect of their enactment, nullify the law of karma. Bad deeds would no longer lead to bad outcomes, and the fragile moral order of our nation would break apart. For tea partiers, this scenario is not science fiction. It is the last 80 years of American history.

Methinks hes on to something there.

Good afternoon all. Great start this morning at 50, warming to 75 by noon, sunny, light breeze. In short, perfect for outdoor chores or just enjoying the day.

Great for shopping at the nearby Methodist church’s annual punpkin patch that offers every kind of pumpkin and gourd one could want. Brought home about 8 of all colors and shapes to decorate the porch and patio. Last year’s final one hit the compost pile in January, probably because of all the rain. Year before that the last one gave out in May. The past two years the remains grew vines in the compost and gave several small pumpkins before summer heat ended the show. They did it through benign neglect.

The WSJ column above nails it, and surely Mr. Jefferson would agree. The LA Times piece above is a perfect example of why the elites and lefties don’t get it–or more likely don’t want to get it. They are busily flailing in the miasma they’ve created to sorta explain the Tea Party Movement to themselves in the most comforting fashion they can muster. Meanwhile lurking in their collective subconscious is the foreboding ride through Sleepy Hollow on November 2, fully aware Brom Bones and his steed will confront them before it’s over. Except, of course, when November 3 comes it is far from over. It is but the end of the beginning, not the beginning of the end.

Early voting begins October 18. Go early and avoid the rush.

However, we took a cab to the Metropolitan Museum this AM and I mentioned that those tour busses looked like they would be hard to handle in this traffic. He agreed and then got off on a story about a guy he knew that set up a tour service and made arrangements with museums, theaters, etc. For special deals, etc. He also was going to erect glass covered waiting areas and went to city council for permits. He didn’t want to play share the wealth of his hard worked for dreams and the council and mayor shut him down. The cabbies are waiting for Nov. 2 now too. They understand tea party ideals very well.

The guy trying to pass off the credit card had prolly done it before without consequence. I figure the beat down was karma catching up with him.

Likewise, the other guy had prolly sustained numerous losses and finally got tired of playing the patsy after having reported the fraud to the authorities many times to no avail.

If a few other of these losers got the cr@p beat out of them on occasion, there would likely be fewer losers willing to take the chance. It’s the primary reason concealed carry laws reduce crime so much. Criminals are not necessarily stupid (though many are); they operate on risk vs. reward. Ifthey see not much risk for a relatively good reward, they’ll take it. If the risk is too high (e.g. a righteous and thorough beat-down administered with great vigor for less than $20), they’ll try something else.

#18 Darren, with all due respect, this is not a well thought out question. I understand that you were tossing some sideways criticism of my position to end the drug wars, but this is completely apples and oranges, and irrational.

Why should government spend billions of dollars on cracking down on fraud if people are still going to act frauduantly?

Far more people have died from the violence associated with and enabled by our government’s failed and expensive war on drugs than have died from abusing the substances themselves. That is a fact. Look it up.

Drugs are bad. The government’s war against them is worse. It’s high time to talk about policies that might actually work. What you support has not, does not, and never will.

Tedtam, I would not belong to a religion that promotes sharia law and all the horrific things that go with Islam. Ask your brother to be sensitive about women who are beaten, raped, and then executed. Women who are sexually mutilated. Women who are not permitted to have health care. Women who are not allowed out in public without a male escort of a member of their families, and beaten if they are caught. Women who can’t drive. Women who can’t vote. Women who are forced into marriages at ages before 14. So called honor killings.

About 5 years ago I saw a National Geographic program that was recent then from Egypt. A woman had been accused by her husband of adultery. For her trial, they were going to lay a red hot iron on her tongue. If it blistered, she was guilty. If it didnโ€™t, she was innocent. THAT is modern Islam. Liberals willfully ignore the realities of what Islam truly represents.

#35 WB, fwiw there are currently no laws in Texas prohibiting people (including females) from being topless.

The same is true in many other states, including New Hampshire, where a native Texan named Cassidy was “busted” by the local constabulary the first time she walked down the street topless (and with a handgun strapped around her waist.) Ultimately, their bogus charges were dropped (duh!) and it seems the cops learned their lesson. “Topless Tuesday’s” are now a tradition in Keene NH. (Content Advisory: Poor video quality.)

Well Texas ladies, what are you waiting for? ๐Ÿ˜‰

That sort of nonsense was rampant in Austin when I lived there back in the 70’s. It led to Barton Springs, the most popular swimmin’ hole in town, becoming top-optional during that time. The topless sunbathers were then spittin’ mad about being gawked at.

Common sense is no doubt still more rare in Austin than here in Houston. And according to Wikipedia, Barton Springs and indeed all of Austin, is still top-optional today!

    Angela Merkel getting it right.

Mrs Merkel stressed that immigrants living in Germany needed to do more to integrate, including learning to speak German.

“Anyone who does not immediately speak German”, she said, “is not welcome”.

Sadly, she has bigger cojones than most everyone in government here.

About the pipe beat-down — consider that if the police had arrived and beat the perp with a pipe, they would be in trouble. How then can anyone say the employee was justified in the beating as described? The story did not say the thief was about to get away or threatened the employee detaining him.

I don’t see any justification for it, the beating was at odds with law and order.

It may have been illegal, but it may also have been deserved, which has been my point. Just like if I insult someone’s wife at a bar and the husband decides I need a good, stiff punch in the jaw. He would likely be guilty of assault/battery, but I would likely have deserved it as well.

We’ve gotten to the point in this country where people have no real fear of breaking most laws because there’s no real downside to that activity. Law-abiding people and those who are otherwise playing by the rules are getting more and more tired of being the chumps, whether it’s a case like the one I linked to, the Katrina evacuees who are still milking us for benefits after over five years, people who bought way more house than they should have and are getting bailouts, people who demand health insurance as a “right” but are not willing to actually work or pay for it, or any of a number of other things we can all think of.

When society starts treating those who are not acting as they should better than those who are, we see people like the unnamed restauranteur take things into their own hands.

Mr. Aguilar certainly deserved what he got. One would hope he would review his life choices while nursing his wounds.

From another story on the incident:

The police report even says that the man with the pipe admitted to assault because he “was sick and tired of this type of thing happening at his business.”

Sounds like something that keeps happening to him and he decided more needed to be done.

It’s wasting billions as fraud is still rampant despite government’s heavy-handed tactics. So the only course we as a society have at our disposal is to legalize fraud. We should no longer let politicians use their authoritah just to get elected. Those who want to keep fraud illegal are inflicting their moral superiority upon those who desire to be free to fraud people out of money.

Reminded me of when I used to buy ornamental gourds every fall and then try my darndest to have them dry out without decaying. A dried gourd is a forever gourd! But some always rot and get pitched into the compost where the seeds easily germinate the following spring. I always picked out the most outrageous shapes, colors & textures when I bought gourds, but then the ones that grew in the compost were always plain. Guess the bizarro genes must be recessive.

I see now you can buy gourd seeds that are bred to retain the extreme features.

Bob24 did not doctor the brownies. They were very good, and if anything outside the recipe was added I would have felt it and likely would have needed someone to drive me home. Drove home myself.

As usual there was lotsa food left over to cart home. For a while our merry madcap band was the only one in the area; other folks arrived nearby little by little but it was not crowded. It’s a good spot for another get together should we want one.

Woke up this morning to a fencing issue that left me a choice to fix NOW or come to the shindig and possibly loose mares and next years breedings to coyotes. Just got finished here at dusk so ya know what my choice was. If’n there be another gathern I’ll plan on making it.

Had a GREAT time at the No-Brew-Ha-Ha and I have no need to blackmail Katfish because I believe I know who the 3.5 women are? Wild horses couldn’t get the answer out of me. ๐Ÿ™‚ I am looking forward to the next gathering and we will have to “™” tedtam’s nickname she called the gathering at the park today. The yantzee winner and the group photo with other photos that Jennifer, my daughter and no blogger took, I will link soon when she post them, and hopefully tedtam will post her photos soon also. ๐Ÿ˜‰
